Layout and color help for my new space

Just moved into a cozy 90s bungalow and I'm excited but clueless on how to make the living room feel more open and inviting. It's got a corner fireplace, built-in shelves, and one big window but the layout feels a bit off. Thinking of adding a rug and maybe swapping out some furniture.

Any suggestions on what kind of furnitures should I get? Also, the color of the wall is gray, what color should I change it to make it look bigger and not too dark inside? Thanks!

Go with light, neutral wall colors like soft white or warm beige to brighten things up, you can choose modular or low-profile furniture to keep the space feeling open, also add mirrors to reflect natural light.
